How Warmer Weather Impacts Your Spine

Ahhh, warmer weather. ☀️ Longer days, backyard hangouts, weekend warrior projects, and maybe even that annual guilt trip from your lawn. I love this time of year—Shakopee finally thaws out, and people start moving again. But here’s something most folks don’t realize:

Warmer weather doesn’t magically fix your spine. In fact, it can stir up a whole new batch of problems if you’re not paying attention.

Let’s talk about what’s really going on when the temps rise and why your spine still needs a little love—maybe especially this time of year.

1. You’re More Active… But Are You Ready?

Warm weather usually means you’re outside more—gardening, running, biking, golfing, grilling (and moving heavy patio furniture like a hero). The problem? A lot of us go from 0 to 100 without preparing our bodies. Those tight hips and stiff backs from the winter don’t just disappear when the sun comes out.

Tip: Ease into it. Do some light stretching before and after activities. And don’t underestimate the power of a simple walk to reintroduce movement to your joints.

2. Sweat = Dehydration = Spinal Stress

When it’s hot out, you sweat more—which means your body (including the discs between your spinal vertebrae) can lose hydration. That can make those joints feel stiffer or more irritated than usual.

Tip: Water. Water. Water. Your spine loves hydration. If you’re sweating more, drink more—simple as that.

3. Yard Work is Basically a Full-Body Workout

Lifting bags of mulch, pushing the mower, bending, twisting, raking—it’s not a casual stroll. It’s a workout, and your spine and muscles feel it. Especially if your core isn’t engaged or you’re bending the wrong way.

Tip: Switch sides frequently when raking or lifting, and take breaks! You’re not in a landscaping competition (unless you are, and then we need to talk 😆).

4. Sleeping Habits Shift

Windows open, temperature swings, different pillows while traveling—your sleep setup may not be as spine-friendly during summer. This can cause more tossing, turning, or waking up stiff.

Tip: Keep your sleep position as neutral as possible (think: aligned head, shoulders, and hips). And if your pillow feels like it’s not doing the job, it probably isn’t.

5. Pain Might “Feel” Better… But That Doesn’t Mean It’s Gone

Warmer temps and more movement can trick you into thinking that old ache or stiffness just magically disappeared. Spoiler alert: it’s probably still there, just temporarily quiet.

Tip: This is the perfect time to catch up and keep up with care. Feeling good now doesn’t mean you’ll stay that way—unless you put in the maintenance.

Keep Up, Don’t Catch Up (If You Can Help It)

Here’s the truth: warmer weather is awesome for encouraging movement, but it also exposes what your body’s been holding onto. Now’s the time to make sure your spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system are actually ready to support your lifestyle—not just survive it.

Let’s make sure you’re not limping into July. Whether it’s your first visit or your regular check-in, I’ve got your back (literally).

Let’s make sure your spine enjoys the sunshine just as much as you do. 😎
