Why January Is the Best Time to Recommit to Your Health

January shows up every year with the same energy: a little messy from the holidays, a little sleepy, and a lot ready for a reset. And honestly…this is when I see people’s bodies asking for help the loudest.
Most patients come in because something finally “barked” at them — a low back that locked up, a neck that stiffened overnight, a shoulder that suddenly isn’t cooperating. But what I remind people is: most of these things built up over months.
So January? It’s the perfect time to catch up and then keep up.
1. Your body’s recovering from holiday chaos
Let’s be real — December is basically a full-body obstacle course:
carrying packages
weird sleep schedules
long drives
cold weather
sitting more than usual
stress (lots of it)
By January, most people feel tighter, stiffer, and a little off. This is your body saying, “Hey… can we deal with this now?”
2. Winter = less blood flow = more stiffness
Colder weather naturally pulls blood flow toward your core to protect vital organs. That means:
less circulation to your joints
tighter muscles
stiffer movement
slower recovery
This is one of the biggest reasons I see an uptick in aches this time of year — and it’s one of the easiest things to prevent with regular care.
3. Routines reset — and this is where you can win
I love January because people naturally restart their schedules. When life gets structured again, it becomes way easier to stay consistent with your health habits:
Movement
Hydration
Sleep
Preventative adjustments
When your routine is steady, your body responds better. It’s that simple.
4. Preventative care hits harder at the start of the year
A lot of people think chiropractic is only for pain — but honestly, the best time to get adjusted is before things flare up.
When we catch up to the problem early in the year, it’s a lot easier to:
Improve mobility
Keep tension down
Prevent those “random” injuries
Help your joints move the way they’re supposed to
January gives us a clean starting point.
So, how do you take advantage of this month?
Here are some simple things I tell my patients:
✔️ Get checked early in the year - Don’t wait until something locks up. Let’s start strong.
✔️ Move every day — even if it’s just 5–10 minutes - Mobility wins over intensity this time of year.
✔️ Drink more water than you want to - Winter dehydration sneaks up fast.
✔️ Break up your sitting time - Set reminders. Your back will thank you.
✔️ Stay ahead of stress - Stress shows up in the body — shoulders, low back, jaw, mid-spine… you name it. In the winter months, a lot of people get less sunlight, which can mean lower Vitamin D. When that happens, I often see people feeling more run-down, achier, and slower to bounce back.
If you’ve ever been told your Vitamin D runs low (or you suspect it might), Vitamin D3 can be a helpful seasonal add-on. If you’re unsure, I always recommend checking with your primary care provider so you’re not guessing.
For patients who want a trusted, high-quality option, I do have a Fullscript store I use in practice — it’s simply there to make things easier when supplements are appropriate. You get 20% off every order storewide and free shipping on orders over $50.
If you’ve been feeling “a little off,” January is the easiest month to get back on track. Let’s reset your movement, loosen things up, and start the year with your body actually feeling good — not just getting by. Book your appointment today.
