Improve Your Work Posture

Work Posture

If you spend a lot of time at your desk, like many of us do, you might be dealing with some aches and pains related to poor posture. As a chiropractor, I see firsthand the difference good posture can make, especially when you’re working long hours. Let’s dive into some practical tips to help improve your posture at work and keep you feeling great throughout the day.

Awareness is Key

First things first, you need to be aware of your posture. This might sound basic, but it’s the foundation for improvement. Throughout the day, check in with yourself:

  • Are you slouching or leaning forward?

  • Are your shoulders rounded?

  • Is your head tilted down or forward?

Becoming mindful of these habits is the first step to correcting them.

Set Up an Ergonomic Workspace

Your workspace setup plays a huge role in your posture. Ensure your computer monitor is at eye level to prevent neck strain. Invest in a chair that supports the natural curve of your spine, providing good lower back support. Posture starts with your low back curve being in a normal position which is why many work chairs come with lumbar support.  Keep your feet flat on the floor to avoid crossing your legs, which can lead to hip imbalance. Arrange your keyboard and mouse so that your elbows are at a 90-degree angle and close to your body.

Take Regular Breaks

Sitting for long periods can wreak havoc on your posture. Aim to take a break every 45-60 minutes. Stand up, stretch, and walk around a bit. Here are a few stretches you can do at your desk:

  • Neck Stretch: Gently tilt your head towards one shoulder, hold for 15-30 seconds, then switch sides.

  • Shoulder Rolls: Roll your shoulders backwards in a circular motion for 10 reps to open up the chest which gets tight after prolonged sitting.

  • Spinal Twist: While seated, twist your torso gently to one side, hold for a few seconds, then switch.

Strengthen Your Core

A strong core supports good posture.  The core is more than just abs. Incorporate core-strengthening exercises into your routine to help maintain an upright posture. Planks are great for overall core strength, bridges and superman strengthen your lower back and glutes, and abdominal crunches target your upper abs.

Practice Good Body Mechanics

How you move throughout the day also affects your posture. When lifting, always bend at your knees, not your waist, and engage your core. Use a step stool instead of stretching to reach high places. When standing, distribute your weight evenly on both feet and avoid locking your knees.

Choose Supportive Footwear

Believe it or not, your footwear can impact your posture. High heels and unsupportive shoes can throw off your alignment. Opt for shoes that provide good arch support and keep your feet comfortable.

Engage in Posture-Improving Exercises

Here are a few simple exercises to help retrain your body to maintain good posture:

  • Wall Angels: Stand with your back against a wall, arms at a 90-degree angle, and slowly raise and lower them as if making a snow angel.

  • Chin Tucks: Pull your chin back (as if making a double chin) to strengthen your neck muscles.

  • Seated Rows: Use resistance bands to mimic rowing, which strengthens your upper and middle back muscles.

Check Your Sleep Position

Even your sleeping position can affect your posture. Try to sleep on your back or side with a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it can strain your back and neck.
